Astronomers have captured some of the highest resolution images of Jupiter ever obtained from the ground using a technique known as “lucky imaging”. The programme provides yearly Hubble global views of the outer planets to look for changes in their storms, winds, and clouds. Hubble also captured a new multiwavelength observation in ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared light of Jupiter on 25 August 2020, which is giving researchers an entirely new view of the giant planet. Almost resembling a van Gogh painting, the latest images reveal Jupiter’s tumultuous northern regions during a close approach by JunoCam – which was 5,375 miles away from Jupiter’s clouds during its closest flyby. The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA.

The super-storm is still shrinking, as noted in telescopic observations dating back to 1930, but its rate of shrinkage appears to have slowed. After analysing the swirls, NASA’s scientists have revealed that the planet features ‘pop-up’ clouds, which rise above the surrounding features and stand out at the tops and edges of the swirling patterns, showing great depth.
